# Alteryx Input Data Tool > Prophecy Table & Source Gems

> Mapping between Alteryx’s Input Data tool and Prophecy’s Table and Source gems

The [Alteryx Input Data tool](https://help.alteryx.com/current/en/designer/tools/in-out-tools/input-data-tool.html) loads data from files, databases, or network shares directly into the Designer canvas for immediate local preview and in-memory processing.

In Prophecy, this functionality is handled by two gems, depending on where the data is stored:

* **Table gem** – for data stored in your [SQL Warehouse](/data-analysis/environment/fabrics/create-fabrics) defined in your fabric.
* **Source gem** – for tables in external systems or data stored in locations that Prophecy Automate can read as files (CSV, Parquet, JSON, XML, Excel, and so on).

## Automated migration results

The importer preserves basic configuration when determinable, using the following logic:

* If the Alteryx pipeline reads from a local file path, Prophecy creates an SFTP source with the same file path.
* If the Alteryx pipeline uses query based source, Prophecy creates a catalog table source.

Migration cannot fully preserve:

* Local paths, mapped drives, or UNC shares
* DSNs and other desktop-specific connection types
* Excel features such as named ranges or custom cell selections
* Alteryx-specific type overrides.

## Manually replicate in Prophecy

To reproduce the behavior of Alteryx’s Input Data tool in Prophecy, focus first on identifying the *type of source* you used in Alteryx, then select the corresponding Prophecy gem.

## Configuration options

In Alteryx, users configure the Input Data tool by selecting a file or database connection, choosing a connection type (file path, DSN, ODBC), and specifying format options. Alteryx immediately loads a preview locally.

In Prophecy:

* Use a **Table gem** to select a catalog, schema, and table visible to the SQL Warehouse.
* Use a **Source gem** to connect to either an external database or a cloud path accessible to the warehouse.
* All data access depends on warehouse permissions rather than local machine paths.

Key properties include:

* **Source Type** — Table or File.
* **File Format** — CSV, Parquet, JSON, XML, Excel (XLSX), fixed-width text (with schema supplied).
* **Path / Catalog / Schema / Table Name** — the warehouse-visible location.
* **Header** — for CSV or Excel.
* **Delimiter / Quote Character** — CSV-specific settings.

## Output behavior

Alteryx loads data locally and often displays full datasets during preview. The Input Data tool outputs an in-memory data stream directly into the workflow engine.

Prophecy outputs a logical reference that turns into a SQL query during preview or execution. Important differences:

* **Data is never loaded locally** — all reads occur through the SQL Warehouse.
* **Preview results** may be truncated due to warehouse row limits or permissions.
* **Schema is warehouse-defined** — type inference may differ from Alteryx’s local behavior.

## Known caveats

Be aware of the following during migration:

* **Local or network paths cannot be used**: files must be migrated to cloud storage.
* **DSNs do not migrate**: replace with workspace-managed secrets or OAuth connections.
* **Excel behavior differs**: named ranges, multi-sheet operations, and complex formatting must be reimplemented manually.
* **Case sensitivity**: may affect table or column resolution in SQL Warehouse.

## Example

### Alteryx Input Data example

Goal: Load a CSV file from a network drive.

**Configuration:**

* File path: `\\corp-share\data\sales.csv`
* Delimiter: `,`
* First row contains field names
* Local preview shows 500 rows

Workflow:

Input Data → downstream tools

### Prophecy Table / Source gem example

Goal: Load the same dataset using SQL.

**Configuration (Source gem):**

* Source Type: File
* Format: CSV
* Path: `/Volumes/raw/sales/sales.csv`
* Header: true
* Delimiter: `,`

Workflow:

Source → downstream gems → output
